Luau at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay No trip to Hawaii would be complete without a luau. At Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa, Kamaha`o “The Wondrous Myths of Hawaii” by Ka'ike Productions, is a thoughtful celebration of legends originating here on the island that was the birthplace and home of King Kamehameha, the great Ali'i (chief/royalty) who is credited with uniting all the Hawaiian Islands. Each Monday sunset views from Bayview Lawn provide an irresistible backdrop for a dramatic dinner and show. Kamaha`o is laced with many of the aspects visitors may expect at a luau such as the excitement and gracefulness of traditional Hawaiian dance to delicious food prepared by Sheraton Keauhou’s talented culinary staff, but also much more. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with unique ecosystems, and a distinct human culture. The park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes, and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. Caves within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are predominately lava tubes, although there are other types of subterranean voids including sea caves, earth cracks, pit craters, volcanic vents, rift magma chambers, caves caused by inflation of lava sheets, and tree casts. Associated with many of these features are sensitive resources that include invertebrates, cultural remains, paleontological deposits, and unusual geologic formations. Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube) is open every day to the public. Pua Po'o, another lava tube cave, is open to the public only through pre-arranged Ranger led tours every Wednesday.www.nps.gov/havo

Mauna Kea Summit Adventures The trip begins mid-afternoon with a pick-up at one of our central locations in Kailua Kona or at the Kings Shops (Waikoloa) or at the Jct. of Hwy 190 and 200. As we drive up the mountain, we learn about island geography, geology and natural history. While acclimatizing and dining at the Mauna Kea visitors’ center, you'll find out why the world's largest telescopes are located on this spot. And you'll learn a bit about the lives of astronomers who work there. Before leaving the visitors center we issue parkas and gloves (the warmest available) and engage our four wheel drive for the steep 1/2 hour drive to the summit area. On the summit, your guide will point out the observatories as they begin to open and rotate into position. You'll learn about famous observatories such as Keck, Subaru and Gemini. There is plenty of time for photos while the sunset transforms the area into a beautiful and quite unearthly spectacle. When the best of the color has past, we descend to mid-mountain, where the sky is equally clear but the climate and air density is much more comfortable for stargazing. Almost every night we explore the night sky using our large portable telescopes. Using high power green lasers our guides are famous for their ability to locate the treasures of the night sky and interpret them in a way that everyone can understand. Our clientele is usually very international so don't be surprised to hear us narrating in a few different languages. Halfway through the evening we serve hot drinks and cookies to take the chill off. The tour is 7 to 8 ½ hours in duration. The actual schedule of the trip varies throughout the year according to sunset times. Mauna Kea Summit Adventures P.O. St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church or known simply as, ‘the Painted Church’ is a short 20 minute walk from South Kona Hideaway. The present church was erected in 1899 by Father John Velghe. Without any professional training and using house paint on ordinary wood he beautified the church with his paintings, spending over four years with saw and brush to complete the structure. The exterior of the church is noted for the belfry, called a little masterpiece, and the lattice work entry. Inside, the eye is overpowered by a reproduction of the vaulted Gothic nave of the Cathedral of Burgos in Spain nearby to where Father John had studied theology. Fortunately, he didn't realize such an illusionary perspective, the sense of depth, was considered impossible, and so he went ahead and did it anyway. 84-5140 Painted Church Road, Captain Cook, Hawai’i 96704; Phone: (808) 328-2227 www.thepaintedchurch.org
